Chapter 8
DNA Tracks
Edwin threw open the department store roof entrance door and leapt down the steps two at a time, his mind going a mile-a-minute, worried about the two strange-looking men, "Trackers" the crazy guy who thinks he is an alien called them, tracking down his father or, God forbid, his little sister. "I have to warn Dad!" Edwin thought, Let Dad hear about what the Fartin’ Man said! He will know what ta do!
Edwin bounded down the dark stairwell, floor after floor, until he found an open door and flinging it open, charged into the too-bright, white light of the Macy's department store floor. He ran through the store, ignoring employees yelling, "Slow down" and "No running!" and "Hey! Store's closed!" Edwin quickly made his way to the main exit and the watchman kindly let him out, nodding and saying, "Merry Christmas now, young man."
Edwin turned north and ran as hard as he could down the dark street lamp lit streets that were becoming more and more deserted as the final stores closed. After a few blocks he became a bit winded so he slowed to a jog and then, there just ahead, he spied Frankie of all people.
Frankie was hanging out in front of a small Italian restaurant, leaning against a concrete pilaster, looking down at the ground, lost in contemplation when a man wearing a white apron over a dark gray suit popped his head out the glass restaurant door and hollered to Frankie, "Hey kid! I can still see ya there! I told ya ta scram! Now beat it!"
Frankie turned on his heel and started walking without even acknowledging the man. He didn’t see Edwin either. Edwin slowed down a bit, giving Frankie some space and followed him a few blocks. They were headed in the same direction anyway. Then Edwin jogged a bit more and caught up to Frankie, surprising him from behind, yelling, "Yo! Frankie! Didn’t think I woulda bumped inta ya out here! Where ya headin’?"
Frankie, hands stuffed hard in his front pants pockets, kept walking as if Edwin wasn’t there then glanced at him briefly and replied, "Don’t know... Back... Eventually."
Edwin walked next to him silently for a few minutes then said, "Hey Frankie, ya rememba the Böögen?"
Frankie looked up at Edwin with a puzzled look on his face then back down at the ground three feet in front of him. "That stupid story that the Pretty Penguin told. Yeah. I rememba."
"She ain’t no penguin."
"What?"
"I said she ain’t no penguin."
"They’re all penguins."
"The rest, yeah, but not her."
"Whatever ya say." It was odd that Frankie was in no mood for conflict. "Well what about it?"
"The Böögen. The story she usta tell. Do ya think it was real?"
Frankie laughed out loud and yelped, "Ha ha ha! Whattaya? A dope?!"
Edwin was silent as they walked and Frankie chuckled and said, "Ain’t none of those stories real, Cardona. Get that through your fat head."
Edwin didn’t say anything as Frankie continued, "I don’t know why I keep lookin’ afta ya, Cardona.
